Finally we made it to the public.
Phil, the best lead author of the Redbook, we ever could get came back and did it. He pulled all our work though the mills of IBM and the legal reviews and finally got it.

Review of the week

Back home in Germany.
Back to family.
Back to business.
My "real world job" claims all the time.
First IBM internal draft of the book got published.
Jetlag degrades now....
... but read the whole story:
Could not get any sleep on the flight (as usual) and had a Russian sitting next to me drinking Vodka for the whole night every 30 minutes. I was back on Saturday noon in Muenster airport. My wife and kids were there to take me back home. The rest of the day the kids had so many funny and nice ideas and we played the whole afternoon. After dinner I went to bed trying to get some sleep. I think 4 hours from 1am to 5am .... So Sunday began very tired. German breakfast. Rolls! Great. All the things I like for breakfast. Noon: Barbecue. And all the day in the backyard playing with the kids.
Next night: Again 4 hours. Monday I went back to the customer project I left before the Residency. Some trouble to get things done, project needs some rearrangements. All schedules are shifted.
Rest of the week needed to get the project back on the track and getting things done. Really few sleep at night, but last night to Friday I'm back to my usual 6 to 7 hours.

Early Checkin gives a good seat on the flights...

Went to the airport in Boston at 12.30 to checkin my flight home. I thought to get a good seat would be worth the extra trip out of Cambridge. The Lufthansa counter just was to be opened and I had to wait about 30 Minutes until I could get to the counter. But that's OK - I calculated up to an hour. Gregory got a car from Hertz inbetween and drove us back to the office to do some final work and edit some stuff, put comments in and so on....

Travel Home

Before homesickness overwhelms me - I'm happy to travel home today. I really really miss my family, my wife, my kids!
Also I miss this good food at home, not everyday's foodcourt whatever sandwich, pizza, chicken something, you name it.
So having a real home style breakfast, normal food, my own bed, my favourite beer - well Sam Adams is not that bad, but you know - being hoem is different.

Famous Last Day....

Today, Friday is the last official day of our Residency. Some homesickness takes place and also some fun. We made some cool mugsto remember the good time here. At 10 we will meet again for a last official breakout meeting, eat some great cinnamon rools and banana bread, Phil brought this morning from his wife. Thank you, we'l have a good day today.

Last Week for the Redbook!

What we will do in the last week: Last chapter reviews - we already got good and extensive feedback from development. We will add more additional and some considered as optional stuff, enhance the samples to make them look really nice, clearify bad code, remove dubious comments and so on. Friday it will be done and the first internal draft will go out to the IBM Intranet.
... and finally: have some more fun.

Nauset Beach @ Cape Cod

Well, you know. If you're not that familiar with the area and environment - you have to rely on yourself. This leads to unpredictable results in finding the right places to hang out and have a good time. This Sunday was somehow different from the ones before. We had some plans, but also found that bringing a grill to the beach and having a barbecue with a case of Sam - impossible, if you do not want to end up in jail. Ok, so we went out to Cape Cod to find a "commercialised" beach, with some sun umbrellas, tables and chairs, sitting at the waterfront having a beer and a steak or lobster. But we couldn't find one. We drove to nearly every beach on the way from Plymouth to the outer cape. Finally we ended up on Nauset Beach. Nice place and good entertainment. It took us three and a half hours to get there from Boston and the way back after a nice dinner in "Lobster Pound" in Orleans was almost a five hours drive through all the traffic jam heading back to Boston from the Cape.

Going to have a good Sunday

Just had a great adequate breakfast after that awesome night with scrambled eggs with cheese, hashbrowns with onions and coffee. All made by myself.
Now we're going to get a grill, charcoal, steaks, beer, coke.... all you need for a barbecue at the best picknick place - the beach. Seems to become a very good Sunday.

Faneuil Hall is Awesome

Yeah - work is done for this week - having fun for the weekend now. Immediately. So going out, get some beer, get some good food - like steaks - and end up with a beer at a bar. Ok. So far the plan.
Purvi invited us to join her and some other guys for the evening in the 33 restaurant & lounge .... nice place. So first we went to the Cheers Bar at Faneuil Hall, and tried to get a good place, to watch people and getting good food. We had a really good time at the Cheers Bar. So Purvi and her party finally found us there sitting at the corner, watching people and having fun. They joined us for a drink and we had a good time. Fun. So they went to the lounge and we stood there. After midnight we headed back to Cambridge with a cab. Had a really good time.

One Chapter for Saturday

Today it's graphics day

Have you ever used Adobe Framemaker? Well, then zou can imagine some of the challenges, we have to overcome. Just put together a chart with Microsoft Powerpoint, create a table within Microsoft Excel or Word and try to get them into a Framemaker document. On screen that looks pretty well, but printed it's a shame. This integration is not that tight as it could be. But Framemaker it self with all the ITSO tools and REXX scripts and gadgets they made is really good to write books like this.

First Chapter (of five) submitted, 2nd will follow soon

The most important chapter - a walkthrough the creation process of a completly new main page for Domino Web Access has been completed and submitted for review. The 2nd chapter will follow tomorrow regarding considerations of DWA customization and also a deep dive into the architecture - which should help to understand, what needs to be done for the customization.
The 3rd, 4th and 5th chapter will follow up to Friday: We are on a very good way and I think this Redbook will become a good source of knowledge and also for learning about DWA.

Sunday... keep going ....

This nice sunshiny Sunday we rent a car at Harvard Square and took the way to the north out of Boston. Heading all the way ... keep going ... to Salem, got some steaks for lunch and took a walk through the city to a witch house, learned all about witches and spells ... and then we found a castle beeing a church. I couldn't believe ... maybe a spell ... We went to the National Park Service Salem Visitor Center and took a look at the local exhibition.
From Salem we drove ... keep going ... to the north and went up to Gloucester and Rockport. The nice wether invited us to take a short stop at the beach. Nice houses and villas and mansions around there ... keep going ... finally we found the Babson's Quarry at Halibut Point State Park. Amazing.
On the way back to Cambridge we stopped at a McD and took a quick dinner. Went to Stop'n Shop and got the food for the upcoming week. Just to fill the fridge and prepare for breakfast. That's it for today folks. Have good night.

Another rainy Saturday in Boston...

And again: Rain, rain, rain. This brought several options: Watch Worldcup games on TV and take a break to visit another important historic, cultural or otherwise important place. So 1st choice was to watch the games, 2nd to go out to the Museum of Fine Arts. We took both.

Worldcup went very well for England: They won 1:0 against Paraguay. With a selfgoal. Unbelievable. Watch the report: ESPN Soccernet

After a short lunch in the Cambridgeside Galleria Mall Food Court we took the T Green Line directly to the museum. Took a 2 hour walk and still have not seen everything. It is really exciting. We started on floor 1 with the egyptian, Nubian and Greek exhibitions.
We then went through the American arts of the 19th-century, the Asian and the Indian rooms and an exhibition of modern Masters. Entering the 2nd floor there were the European arts of the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Also the old European masters are in a great exhibition hall. Enough for today's culture. We went back to Cambridge and got again very good dinner at Legal Sea Foods... Good night folks.

Things going well

Some major parts are already done very well and we are in a good shape for the time left. The introduction is at about 60% ready, considerations and architecture at about 40%, feature customization at about 80% - and believe me, this is the most important part together with skin customizations, because these both will show step by step implementation instructions - so one very important one is on a good way, too: the scenario. Well I think, I'll post some details on the scenario later.

We switched the lights off..... again....

Oh oh oh. Why this always happens? I don't know. The sportsbar at the Marriot hotel nearest to our appartments is closing right at midnight. Now we have seen this bar closing again. We had some nachos with cheeeeeese and olives and sourcreme and freshley brewed right for us from the Cambridge Brewing Company: Cambridge Amber. Good stuff.

Well balanced, medium-bodied, with a deep amber-red color, this beer's complex palate covers all the bases. A malty caramel sweetness is followed by notes of chocolate and a dry, slightly roasty finish, complemented by a touch of fruity, spicy hops. OG: 1.048 FG: 1.012 ABV: 4.7%

First "real" Breakfast

Start Over

Today we will finish the customization samples for moving some things around on the page like putting the search bar up right, changing the logo, and even some more difficult things. We now have made the integration of a whole new form from the very beginning of a Notes Client form, made with Designer all the way through to have a DWA form in the browser with the control of how, when and where data is stored.

The Freedom Trail or how we became history nerds

What to do on a Sunday in Boston. First we wanted to get some breakfast. For Sunday there was the challenge to get a very good one and we took the T to Harvard Square. But after we went around and could not find a really nice plaze to check out for breakfast we ended up at Au Bon Pain again. This skill to find the right place to get breakfast has some opportunities to advance. After breakfast Graeme joined us for another trip to Boston. Today the weather was with us - not tooooo shiny but also not that much rain as yesterday. I think, when we are back at the office tomorrow the weather will be perfect sunshine. Isn't that always the case? As good tourists we like to be recognized as, we decided to take a walking lesson in history of about two and a half mile - The Freedom Trail - a red strip leading us all the way from the Boston Common down to the USS Constitution passing 16 historic places. Very impressing parts of the US history. After the 6th station on the trail - the very impressing Kings Chapel, where we had a smart guide telling us the lots of facts about this historic place - we approached the first Starbucks on the way. A perfect place to grab a large coffee to give us some power to continue. Later on we came to Faneuil Hall again and today a performer did some nice interaction with the people and kids around. We watched him for an quarter and took our steps again. At the next corner we met Benjamin Franklin himself! We wondered wether he might missed his timshift ship back but the he talked to us in fluid german! Crazy guy... With this experience we needed some food and beer and we thought that the Bell in Hand would be a nice place to get that. Some steak and again Samuel Adams on Draft. Nice. From here the rest of the way was impressing us with some sights from the italian part of Boston. When we reached the USS Constitution, the last guided tour was already closed - we were about one and a half our to late. But this sailing ship is very impressive. A guide on the deck gave us some interesting information. Leaving the ship we went to the museum right on the other side of the place but the opening hours left just 15 Minutes for a quick walk through. From there we took the way back to the wharf with a water taxi and from there with the T to Central Square in Cambridge. Here we took a detailed look to the dining options and decided to enter an thai restaurant "Pepper Sky's" where the food was good, spicy - what a surprise - and not so expensive. But then we found out very very fast that they don't have a liquor license. Ok. Useless to say that we needed to approach to another place where we could get some Sam Adams. The decision was easy. A two minute walk from the appartment building is the Marriott Hotel in the Cambridge Center. They have a sports bar inside which is open to midnight and - you might image - they also have Sam Adams on draft. So folks, that's it for tonight. I have to grab some sleep now.

Saturday in rainy Boston

Today Gregory and me started at about 10am our touristic trip to Boston. When we left the appartment building it was pouring with rain. With our rain jackets we got to Au Bon Pain in Cambridge Main St. to get a bagel and coffee for breakfast.While sitting there the rain increased more and more. We decided to take a Trolley tour to discover the Boston downtown area and the sights around from the real touristic perspective. Sitting in the trolley was not that warm and dry as we expected because the trolley had not real windows but some kind of foil windows which were not very leakproof. These trolleys are made for sunshiny weather.

We took the trolley all the way round to the wharf where the aquarium is. But seeing the very very very long queue at the entry our way led us to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market.

Oh I missed to mention that there is a Starbucks which had some coffee for refreshing the tired tourists. After that the trolley took us back on board to get nearly a whole round (this time we had seats in the leakproof area) to the Prudential building where a food court took our order for lunch. With some more Coke and delicioius food we made the way to the Boston Public Library. There are terminals where you can dig in history. They have all the records about immigration since about 1300! It's a really impressing bulding, huge and wide with lots and lots and another million of books and other things you can borrow. And entry is free. Internet is free. Mining the databases is free. Thats nice. From there we went to Copley Place waiting for the next trolley - but it didn't arrive in the next 20 minutes or so. Taking the T from arlington station via park station to Kendall Square brought us back to Cambridge.

A quick walk throug the Coop book store at the M.I.T. was amazing. Armed with a Pizza from Domino's we arrived at the appartment bullding after a long long walk. With aching feet and a 2 Liter bottle of Diet Coke we now wait, what the night brings...

Rain, rain, rain and nothing but rain

Hey! These are really cool appartments. Everything is in there. Nice furnited livingroom. Very good kitchen with all things you need. A very good kingsize bed. A comcast 6MBit cable internet line. Also Wireless, if one prefers, but only 2MBit. Two TVs. And some hundred digital TV programs. I don't need them but it's nice to know that they are there, if I would need them.

After the 16 hours since I got up in the morning back in Germany, now there are some hours of work to do. But that's not a problem. The team is really smart and very well skilled. And Phil starts keeping us on a realistic track ;-)

Residency Announcement: LO-D610-R01 Domino Web Access 7 Customization

Description:Lotus Domino Web Access 7 gives users the power to create rich text messages, schedule meetings, manage tasks, and collaborate with colleagues, whether they are using their own workstation, an Internet kiosk, or another user's PC. Offline services for the security-rich e-mail, collaboration, and personal information management features of DWA allow a mobile workforce to maintain a high level of productivity by expanding access to key information and applications. This residency will produce a Redpaper describing customization with DWA.

This residency begins 30 May 2006, ends 23 Jun 2006 (4 weeks), and requires 3 residents. The residency is running in Cambridge MA.
